The various BBC Departments moved during Q2/Q3 2011 included: BBC Children’s (including CBBC and CBeebies television and radio), BBC Children’s Learning, parts of BBC Future Media & Technology (including BBC Research & Development), BBC Radio Five Live (including Five Live Sports Extra), BBC Sport and Breakfast TV.

The development generates a whole new media community in the North of England, including three dedicated BBC buildings, a rental contract to provide a complete studio complex, and a home for numerous independent production and post production companies.

TSL built the following facilities for Peel Media, to be used by the BBC (as anchor tenant) and others under lease arrangements:

  • Seven TV Studios (four full production studios and three presentation studios)
  • One Orchestral Studio (home of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra)
  • One Multi-Purpose Audio Studio (for radio drama & music)
  • The Central Technical Area & Master Control Room
  • Ingest and Edit Suites

Why did Peel choose TSL?

TSL were originally asked to provide guidance regarding costs of building studios prior to Peel’s bid for this prestigious project. On winning the contract, Peel immediately approached TSL to assist with the consultancy phase, having demonstrated a sound technical and commercial understanding of the requirement.
